Craven County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The administrative seat ( county seat ) is New Bern , which was named after the origin of most of the settlers, the city of Bern in Switzerland .

The county is located in eastern North Carolina, about 35 km from the Atlantic Ocean in the southeast , and has an area of 2005 square kilometers, of which 170 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Beaufort County , Pamlico County , Carteret County , Jones County , Lenoir County, and Pitt County .
history
The county was formed on December 3, 1705 as Archdale County . In 1712 it was renamed to its current name. Whether it was named after William Craven, 1st Earl of Craven , one of the first Lord Proprietors of the Carolina Province in 1663, later Lord Proprietor William Craven, 2nd Baron Craven, or his son William Craven, 3rd Baron Craven , is not clarified. The first settlers were mainly German and Swiss immigrants.

As of the 2000 census , Craven County's population was 91,436. 5,137 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 34,582 households and 25,071 families. The population density was 50 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 69.94 percent white, 25.12 percent African American, 0.42 percent Native American, 0.99 percent Asian, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.78 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.68 percent are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.02 percent of the population.
Of the 34,582 households, 33.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.8 percent of these were married couples living together, 12.5 percent were single mothers and 27.5 percent were non-families. 23.4 percent were single households and 8.9 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.93 people.
24.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 12.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.2 percent between 45 and 64, and 13.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For all females there were 101.9 males. For all women aged 18 and over there were 101.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 35,966 US $ and the median income for a family was $ 42,574. Males had a median income of $ 28,163 versus $ 21,412 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,423. 13.1 percent of the population and 9.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. 18.5 percent of them are children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 11.0 percent are 65 years of age or older.
