Avery County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Newland , which was named after Lieutenant Governor William C. Newland .

The county is located in western North Carolina, bordering Tennessee , is 80 km to the north from Virginia , and covers an area of ​​640 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Watauga County , Caldwell County , Burke County , McDowell County, and Mitchell Counties .

Avery County is divided into 19 townships : Altamont, Banner Elk, Beech Mountain, Carey's Flat, Cranberry, Elk Park, Frank, Heaton, Hughes, Ingalls, Linville, Minneapolis, Montezuma, Newland No. 1, Newland No. 2, Pineola, Plumtree, Pyatte and Roaring Creek.

history

Avery County was formed on February 11, 1911 from parts of Caldwell County, Mitchell County and Watauga County. It was named after Waightstill Avery , a colonel in the American Revolutionary War and the first Attorney General of North Carolina.

Twelve buildings and sites in the county are listed in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of February 22, 2018).

Avery County had a population of 17,167 people as of the 2000 census . 1,874 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 6,532 households and 4,546 families. The population density was 27 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.95 percent white, 3.48 percent African American, 0.34 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.28 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.71 percent are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.41 percent of the population.

Of the 6,532 households, 27.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.1 percent of these were married couples living together, 9.1 percent were single mothers and 30.4 percent were non-families. 26.6 percent were single households and 11.0 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.82 people.

19.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 10.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.4 percent between 45 and 64, and 15.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 111.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 112.9 men.

The median income for a household in the 30,627  US $ and the median income for a family was $ 37,454. Males had a median income of $ 25,983 versus $ 21,652 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,176. 15.3 percent of the population and 10.9 percent of families lived below the poverty line, including 19.3 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 19.0 percent of those aged 65 and over.
