Carteret County is a county in the US state of North Carolina in the United States of America . The county seat is Beaufort , named after Henry Somerset, 1st Duke of Beaufort .
geography
The county is located in eastern North Carolina, borders the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of 3472 square kilometers, of which 2126 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Onslow County , Jones County , Craven County, and Pamlico County .
history
Carteret County was formed on August 8, 1722. It was named after John Carteret , who later became Earl Granville and Lord Proprietor in the province of Carolina .
Historical objects
Historic Fort Macon is 4 miles east of Atlantic Beach . The property is located at so-called Bogue Point on Fort Macon Road . The fort was listed on February 26, 1970 on the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic Monument with the number 70000445.
A total of 14 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 23, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Carteret County's 59,383 people lived in 25,204 households and 17,365 families. The population density was 44 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.28 percent white, 6.99 percent African American, 0.54 percent Asian, 0.43 percent Native American, 0.06 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.60 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.09 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.74 percent of the population.
Of the 25,204 households, 26.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.0 percent of these were married couples living together, 9.6 percent were single mothers and 31.1 percent were non-families. 26.1 percent were single households and 10.1 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.76 people.
20.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.4 percent between 18 and 24 years old, 27.2 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 28.4 percent between 45 and 64, and 17.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For all females there were 96.5 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 94.1 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 38,344, and the median income for a family is $ 45,499. Males had a median income of $ 31,365 versus $ 22,126 for females. The per capita income was $ 21,260. 10.7 percent of the population and 8.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. 15.4 percent of them are children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 9.4 percent are 65 years of age or older.
