Bladen County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Elizabethtown , which was named after Queen Elizabeth I of England.

The county is located in southeast North Carolina, about 70 km to the east from the Atlantic Ocean , about 50 km to the southwest from South Carolina and has an area of 2298 square kilometers, of which 32 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Cumberland County , Sampson County , Pender County , Columbus County, and Robeson County .
Bladen County is divided into 15 townships : Abbotts, Bethel, Bladenboro, Brown Marsh, Carvers Creek, Central, Colly, Cypress Creek, Elizabethtown, Frenches Creek, Hollow, Lake Creek, Turnbull, White Oak, and Whites Creek.
The county is home to North Carolina's largest state forest, the Bladen Lakes State Forest .

Bladen County was formed in 1734 from parts of Bath County and New Hanover County. It was named after the Commissioner for Trade and Agricultural Affairs Martin Bladen .

As of the 2000 census , Bladen County had 32,278 people in 12,897 households and 8,937 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 57.22 percent white, 37.91 percent African American, 2.04 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.97 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.73 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.71 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 12,897 households, 30.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.9 percent of these were married couples living together, 15.7 percent were single mothers and 30.7 percent were non-families. 27.7 percent were single households and 11.5 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.97 people.
24.6 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.2 percent between 45 and 64, and 14.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For all females there were 92.6 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 88.7 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 26,877, and the median income for a family is $ 33,974. Males had a median income of $ 27,799 versus women of $ 21,973. The per capita income was $ 14,735. 21.0 percent of the population and 16.6 percent of families are below the poverty line. 28.7 percent of them are children and young people under the age of 18 and 24.2 percent are 65 years of age or older.
