Pender County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Burgaw .

The county is located in southeast North Carolina, borders the Atlantic Ocean , is about 40 miles from South Carolina in the southwest and has an area of 2,416 square kilometers, of which 160 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Duplin County , Onslow County , New Hanover County , Brunswick County , Columbus County , Bladen County, and Sampson County .
Pender County is divided into ten townships : Burgaw, Canetuck, Caswell, Columbia, Grady, Holly, Long Creek, Rocky Point, Topsail, and Union.
history
Pender County was formed on February 16, 1875 from parts of New Hanover County. It was named after William Dorsey Pender , a Confederate general during the American Civil War who was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg .

There is a national battlefield in the county , the Moores Creek National Battlefield . A total of 14 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 21, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Pender County had 41,082 people in 16,054 households and 11,719 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.74 percent white, 23.58 percent African American, 0.49 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.03 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.94 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.64 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 16,054 households, 29.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.9 percent of these were married couples living together, 11.2 percent were single mothers and 27.0 percent were non-families. 22.9 percent were single households and 8.5 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.90 people.
23.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.8 percent between 45 and 64, and 14.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For all females there were 101.2 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 99.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 35,902 US dollars and the median income for a family was 41,633 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,424 versus $ 21,623 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,882. 13.6 percent of the population and 9.5 percent of families are below the poverty line. 18.6 percent of them are children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 14.4 percent are 65 years of age or older.
