Beaufort County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Washington .
geography
The county is located in eastern North Carolina, about 120 km from the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of 2,483 square kilometers, of which 339 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Washington County , Hyde County , Pamlico County , Craven County , Pitt County, and Martin County .
history
Beaufort County was formed on December 3, 1705 from parts of Bath County and was first named Pamptecough . It was given its current name seven years later when it was named after Henry Somerset, 2nd Duke of Beaufort , a Lord Proprietor of the Carolina Province .
The county has a National Historic Landmark , the Palmer-Marsh House . A total of 17 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 22, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Beaufort County had 44,958 people in 18,319 households and 12,951 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 68.44 percent white, 29.03 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.42 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.71 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.24 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 18,319 households, 28.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.6 percent of these were married couples living together, 13.3 percent were single mothers and 29.3 percent were non-families. 25.7 percent were single households and 11.5 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.89 people.
23.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.7 percent were between 18 and 24 years old, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 26.9 percent between 45 and 64, and 15.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For all females there were 91.1 males. For all women aged 18 years or over, there were 87.5 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 31,066 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,893. Males had a median income of $ 30,483 versus $ 21,339 for women. The per capita income was $ 16,722. 19.5 percent of the population and 15.2 percent of families are below the poverty line. 27.6 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 19.3 percent are 65 years of age or older.
