Lincoln County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Lincolnnton .

geography

The county is located in west-central North Carolina, about 30 km south of South Carolina and has an area of ​​795 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Catawba County , Iredell County , Mecklenburg County , Gaston County , Cleveland County, and Burke County .

Lincoln County is divided into townships : Catawba Springs, Howards Creek, Ironton, Lincolnnton, and North Brook.

history

Lincoln County was formed from the defunct Tryon County in 1778. It was named after Benjamin Lincoln , a general in the American War of Independence , like the district capital of Lincoln .

As of the 2000 census , Lincoln County, North Carolina, had 63,780 people in 24,041 households and 18,174 families. The population density was 82 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.24 percent white, 6.44 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.73 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.0 percent are of multiple races and 5.73 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
