Macon County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Franklin , named after Governor Jesse Franklin .

The county is located almost in the far west of North Carolina, borders Georgia in the south , is about 25 miles from Tennessee in the north and has an area of 1,345 square kilometers, of which 8 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Swain County , Jackson County , Clay County , Cherokee County, and Graham County .
Macon County is divided into eleven townships : Burningtown, Cartoogechaye, Cowee, Ellijay, Flats, Franklin, Highlands, Millshoal, Nantahala, Smithbridge and Sugarfork.
history
Macon County was formed in 1828 from parts of Haywood County. It was named after Nathaniel Macon , a spokesman for the House of Representatives and Senator .

Macon County's population was 29,811 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 533 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 12,828 households and 8,902 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.18 percent white, 1.20 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.39 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.31 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.63 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.52 percent of the population.
Of the 12,828 households, 24.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.5 percent of these were married couples living together, 8.0 percent were single mothers and 30.6 percent were non-families. 27.0 percent were single households and 13.6 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.28 and the average family size was 2.74 people.
20.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.9 percent between 45 and 64, and 22.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For all females there were 92.1 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 88.4 men.
The median income for a household in the 32,139 US $ and the median income for a family was $ 37,381. Males had a median income of $ 28,113 versus $ 20,081 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,642. 12.6 percent of the population and 8.8 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 16.0 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 11.8 percent of those aged 65 and over.
