Caswell County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Yanceyville , which was named after the politician Bartlett Yancey .

The county is located in northern North Carolina, bordering Virginia and has an area of ​​1,110 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Person County , Orange County , Alamance County, and Rockingham County .

Caswell County is divided into nine townships : Anderson, Dan River, Hightowers, Leasburg, Locust Hill, Milton, Pelham, Stoney Creek, and Yanceyville.

history

Caswell County was formed on April 8, 1777 from parts of Orange County. It was named after Richard Caswell , the then governor of North Carolina.

According to the 2000 census , Caswell County had 23,501 people in 8,670 households and 6,398 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 61.07 percent white, 36.52 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.17 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.86 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.77 percent of the population.

The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.01.

23.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.0 percent between 45 and 64, and 13.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For all females there were 102.5 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 102.3 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 35,018, and the median income for a family is $ 41,905. Males had a median income of $ 28,968 versus $ 22,339 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,470. 14.4 percent of the population and 10.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. 18.3 percent of them are children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 21.1 percent are 65 years of age or older.
