Granville County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Oxford .
geography
The county is located in northern North Carolina, bordering Virginia and has an area of 1,390 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Vance Counties , Franklin Counties , Wake Counties , Durham Counties , and Person Counties in North Carolina, and Halifax Counties and Mecklenburg Counties in Virginia.
Granville County is divided into nine townships : Brassfield, Dutch Creek, Fishing Creek, Oak Hill, Oxford, Salem, Sassafras Fork, Tally Ho, and Walnut Grove.
In the south of Granville County is a small portion of Falls Lake , in the north some bays of the John H. Kerr Reservoir protrude on the area of the county. It also has a share in the small Island Creek Reservoir .

Granville County was formed in 1746 from parts of Edgecombe County. It was named after John Carteret, 2nd Earl Granville .

According to the 2000 census , Granville County had 48,498 people in 16,654 households and 12,040 families. The population density was 35 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 60.74 percent white, 34.94 percent African American, 0.46 percent Native American, 0.36 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.43 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.06 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 4.02 percent of the population.
Of the 16,654 households, 33.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.1 percent of these were married couples living together, 15.0 percent were single mothers and 27.7 percent were non-families. 23.9 percent were single households and 9.0 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.05.
23.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.5 percent were between 18 and 24 years old, 33.3 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64, and 11.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For all females there were 110.7 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 111.3 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 39,965, and the median income for a family is $ 46,013. Males had a median income of $ 30,418 versus $ 24,840 for women. The per capita income was $ 17,118. 11.7 percent of the population and 9.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. 15.2 percent of them are children and young people under the age of 18 and 14.1 percent are 65 years or older.
