Stanly County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Albemarle , which was named after George Monck, Duke of Albemarle .
geography
The county is located just west of the geographic center of North Carolina, is about 40 km to the south from South Carolina and has an area of 1,047 square kilometers, of which 24 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Rowan County , Montgomery County , Anson County , Union County, and Cabarrus County .
Stanly County is divided into ten townships : Almond, Big Lick, Center, Endy, Furr, Harris, North Albemarle, Ridenhour, South Albemarle, and Tyson.
history
Stanly County was formed in 1841 from parts of Montgomery County. It was named after the politician John Stanly , a member of the North Carolina House of Commons and a member of the House of Representatives .
The county has a National Historic Landmark , the Hardaway Site archeological site . A total of 13 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 16, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Stanly County had 58,100 people in 22,223 households and 16,156 families. The population density was 57 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 84.67 percent white, 11.46 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 1.81 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.01 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.79 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.13 percent of the population.
Of the 22,223 households, 32.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.3 percent of them were married couples living together, 10.5 percent were single mothers and 27.3 percent were non-families. 24.3 percent were single households and 10.8 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.00 people.
25.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.4 percent between 18 and 24 years old, 29.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.4 percent between 45 and 64, and 14.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For all females there were 97.4 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 94.7 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 36,898, and the median income for a family is $ 43,956. Males had a median income of $ 31,444 versus $ 21,585 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,825. 10.7 percent of the population and 8.1 percent of families are below the poverty line. 14.1 percent of them are children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 10.3 percent are 65 years of age or older.
