Scotland County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Laurinburg , named after the McLaurin family , early settlers in the area.

The county is located in southern North Carolina, bordering South Carolina and has an area of 830 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Hoke County , Robeson County, and Richmond County .
Scotland County is divided into four townships : Laurel Hill, Spring Hill, Stewartsville and Williamson.
history
Scotland County was formed on February 20, 1899 from parts of Richmond County. It was named after the home of the early settlers , most of whom came from Scotland .
A total of 14 structures and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 16, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Scotland County's population was 35,998. Of these, 977 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 13,399 households and 9,674 families. The population density was 44 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 51.49 percent white, 37.32 percent African American, 8.88 percent Native American, 0.51 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.46 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.33 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.18 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 13,399 households, 34.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.1 percent of these were married couples living together, 20.4 percent were single mothers and 27.8 percent were non-families. 24.4 percent were single households and 8.9 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.10 people.
28.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.5 percent between 18 and 24 years old, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 23.4 percent between 45 and 64, and 11.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For all females there were 88.4 males. For all women aged 18 or over, there were 83.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county was $ 31,010. that of a family $ 39,178. Males had a median income of $ 31,212 versus $ 23,172 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,693. 20.6 percent of the population and 17.4 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 29.8 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 17.2 percent of those aged 65 and over.
