Lee County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Sanford , which was named after the railroad engineer CO Sanford . The county is named after General Robert Edward Lee .

The county is east of the geographic center of North Carolina and covers an area of ​​672 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Chatham County , Harnett County, and Moore County .

Lee County is divided into seven numbered townships : 1 (Greenwood), 2 (Jonesboro), 3 (Cape Fear), 4 (Deep River), 5 (East Sanford), 6 (West Sanford), and 7 (Pocket).

A total of 17 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 3, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Lee County had 49,040 people in 18,466 households and 13,369 families. The population density was 74 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 70.03 percent white, 20.46 percent African American, 0.42 percent Native American, 0.67 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 7.33 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.06 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.65 percent of the population.

Of the 18,466 households, 33.3 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.3 percent of these were married couples living together, 13.4 percent were single mothers and 27.6 percent were non-families. 23.5 percent were single households and 8.8 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.05.

25.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.0 percent were between 18 and 24 years old, 29.7 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 22.7 percent between 45 and 64, and 12.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For all females there were 97.5 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 95.0 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 38,900  , and the median income for a family is $ 45,373. Males had a median income of $ 32,780 versus $ 23,660 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,147. 12.8 percent of the population and 9.8 percent of families are below the poverty line. 16.5 percent of them are children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.2 percent are 65 years of age or older.
