Pamlico County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Bayboro , named after its location on the Bay River .

The county is located in eastern North Carolina, is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by the offshore peninsulas and has an area of ​​1,467 square kilometers, of which 594 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Beaufort County , Hyde County , Carteret County, and Craven County .

history

Pamlico County was formed in 1872 from parts of Beaufort County. It was named after an Indian tribe.

As of the 2000 census , Pamlico County had 12,934 people in 5,178 households and 3,717 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 73.17 percent white, 24.57 percent African American, 0.53 percent Native American, 0.38 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.59 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.74 percent were descended from two or more races.
