Orange County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Hillsborough , which was named after the Earl of Hillsborough .

geography

The county is located just north of the geographic center of North Carolina, is about 40 km to the north from Virginia and has an area of ​​1,039 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Person County , Durham County , Chatham County , Alamance County, and Caswell County .

Orange County is divided into seven townships : Bingham, Cedar Grove, Chapel Hill, Cheeks, Eno, Hillsborough, and Little River.

Orange County was formed in 1752. It was named either after William V. Batavus Prince of Orange , the son of Prince William IV of Orange and Anna of England , who was the daughter of King George II of Great Britain , or King Wilhelm III.

As of the 2000 census , Orange County's population was 118,227. Of these, 9,943 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 45,863 households and 26,141 families. The per capita income was $ 24,873. 14.1 percent of the population and 6.2 percent of families lived below the poverty line, including 9.0 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 7.4 percent of senior citizens aged 65 and over.
