Richmond County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 46,564 residents and a population density of 38 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Rockingham , which was named after the Marquis of Rockinham .

geography

The county is located in southern North Carolina, bordering South Carolina and has an area of ​​1,242 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Montgomery County , Moore County , Scotland County, and Anson County .

Richmond County is divided into seven townships : Beaverdam, Black Jack, Marks Creek, Mineral Springs, Rockingham, Steele, and Wolf Pit.

history

Richmond County was formed in 1779 from parts of Anson County. It was named after Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond .

Richmond County's population was 46,564 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 1,702 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 17,873 households and 12,582 families. The population density was 38 people per square kilometer.
