Richmond County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 46,564 residents and a population density of 38 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Rockingham , which was named after the Marquis of Rockinham .

geography

The county is located in southern North Carolina, bordering South Carolina and has an area of 1,242 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Montgomery County , Moore County , Scotland County, and Anson County .

Richmond County is divided into seven townships : Beaverdam, Black Jack, Marks Creek, Mineral Springs, Rockingham, Steele, and Wolf Pit.

history

Richmond County was formed in 1779 from parts of Anson County. It was named after Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond .

A total of 17 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 15, 2018).

Richmond County's population was 46,564 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 1,702 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 17,873 households and 12,582 families. The population density was 38 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 64.84 percent white, 30.53 percent African American, 1.65 percent Native American, 0.68 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.08 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.18 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.83 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 17,873 households, 32.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 48.3 percent of them were married couples living together, 17.0 percent were single mothers and 29.6 percent were non-families. 26.3 percent were single households and 11.2 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.01.

25.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 10.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.8 percent between 45 and 64, and 13.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For all females there were 96.3 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 92.7 men.

The median income for a household in the 28,830 US $ , and the median income for a family $ 35,226. Males had a median income of $ 27,308 versus $ 20,453 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,485. 19.6 percent of the population and 15.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 26.7 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 18.9 percent of senior citizens aged 65 and over.
