Duplin County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Kenansville , which was named after General James Kenan . The county ranks 2nd in the United States for pig breeding and pork production.

geography

The county is located in southeastern North Carolina, about 60 km from the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of ​​2,121 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Wayne County , Lenoir County , Jones County , Onslow County , Pender County, and Sampson County .

Duplin County is divided into 13 townships : Albertson, Cypress Creek, Faison, Glisson, Island Creek, Kenansville, Limestone, Magnolia, Rockfish, Rose Hill, Smith, Warsaw and Wolfscrape.

history

Duplin County was formed on April 7, 1750 from parts of New Hanover County. It was named after Thomas Hay, Lord Duplin , later 9th Earl of Kinnoull.

Station in the Wallace Commercial Historic District (2013), which is one of the county's 20 entries in the NRHP.

A total of 20 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of February 28, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Duplin County had 49,063 people in 18,267 households and 13,060 families. The population density was 23 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 58.67 percent white, 28.94 percent African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 10.87 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.06 percent were descended from two or more races. The median age was 35 years. For all females there were 98.3 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 95.6 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,890, and the median income for a family is $ 34,760. Males had a median income of $ 26,212 versus $ 20,063 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,499. 19.4 percent of the population and 15.3 percent of families are below the poverty line. 22.5 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 22.7 percent are 65 years of age or older.
