Gaston County is a county in the US state of North Carolina in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 190,365 residents and a population density of 206 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Gastonia .

geography

The county is located in southwest North Carolina, borders South Carolina in the south and has an area of ​​942 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lincoln County , Mecklenburg County, and Cleveland County .

Gaston County is divided into six townships : Cherryville, Crowders Mountain, Dallas, Gastonia, Riverbend, and South Point.

history

Gaston County was formed on December 21, 1846 from parts of Anson County. It was named, like the district capital Gastonia, after William Gaston , a member of the United States Congress and judge on the Supreme Court of the United States .

The First National Bank Building (2014) is one of 30 entries for the county on the National Register of Historic Places .

A total of 30 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Gaston County had 190,365 people. 3,091 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 73,936 households and 53,307 families.
