Rowan County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Salisbury .
geography
The county is located in west-central North Carolina, about 60 km from South Carolina in the southwest , and has an area of 1,357 square kilometers, of which 32 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Davie County , Davidson County , Stanly County , Cabarrus County, and Iredell County .
Rowan County is divided into 16 townships : Atwell, China Grove, Cleveland, East Spencer, Franklin, Gold Hill, Kannapolis, Litaker, Locke, Morgan, Mount Ulla, Providence, Salisbury, Scotch Irish, Spencer, Steele and Unity.
history
Rowan County was formed on March 27, 1753 from parts of Anson County. It was named after Matthew Rowan , a political leader and governor of the Province of North Carolina from 1753 to 1754.
A total of 65 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 15, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Rowan County had 130,340 people in 49,940 households and 35,507 families. The population density was 98 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.02 percent white, 15.78 percent African American, 0.33 percent Native American, 0.85 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 2.00 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.00 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.12 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 49,940 households, 32.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.8 percent of these were married couples living together, 11.9 percent were single mothers and 28.9 percent were non-families. 24.7 percent were single households and 10.2 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.98 people.
24.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.1 percent between 18 and 24 years old, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 22.5 percent between 45 and 64, and 14.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For all females there were 97.6 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 95.3 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,494, and the median income for a family is $ 44,242. Males had a median income of $ 31,626 versus $ 23,437 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,071. 10.6 percent of the population and 8.1 percent of families are below the poverty line. 13.7 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 11.4 percent are 65 years of age or older.
