Rockingham County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Wentworth .
geography
The county is located in northern North Carolina, bordering Virginia and has an area of 1,482 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Caswell County , Guilford County, and Stokes Counties .
Rockingham Count is divided into eleven townships : Huntsville, Leaksville, Madison, Mayo, New Bethel, Price, Reidsville, Ruffin, Simpsonville, Wentworth and Williamsburg.
history
Rockingham County was formed in 1785 from parts of Guilford County. Like the district capital Wentworth, it was named after Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham , a British politician and Prime Minister.

Rockingham County had a population of 91,928 people as of the 2000 census . Of these, 1,186 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 36,989 households and 26,188 families. The population density was 63 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 77.33 percent white, 19.57 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.28 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.69 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.83 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 3.07 percent of the population.
Of the 36,989 households, 30.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.6 percent of these were married couples living together, 12.8 percent were single mothers and 29.2 percent were non-families. 25.7 percent were single households and 10.8 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.93 people.
23.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64, and 14.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For all females there were 93.3 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 89.8 men.
The median income for a household in the year was $ 33,784 and that of a family was $ 40,821. Males had a median income of $ 30,479 versus $ 22,437 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,120. 12.8 percent of the population and 10.2 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 16.3 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 15.5 percent of those aged 65 and over.
