Graham County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Robbinsville .

geography

The county is located almost in the far west of North Carolina, bordering Tennessee , is about 40 km from Georgia in the south and has an area of ​​781 square kilometers, of which 25 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Swain County , Macon County, and Cherokee Counties .

Graham County is divided into three townships : Cheoah, Stecoah, and Yellow Creek.

history

Graham County was formed on January 30, 1872 from parts of Cherokee County. It was named after William Alexander Graham , a governor and US senator .

The Cheoah Hydroelectric Development (2016) is one of six entries for the county on the National Register of Historic Places .

Six buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Graham County had 7,993 people in 3,354 households and 2,411 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.91 percent white, 0.19 percent African American, 6.84 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.13 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.76 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the county is $ 26,645, and the median income for a family is $ 32,750. Males had a median income of $ 24,207 versus women of $ 18,668.
