Jones County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Trenton , which was named after the Trent River .

The county is located in southeast North Carolina, about 25 km from the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of 1,226 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Craven County , Carteret County , Onslow County , Duplin County, and Lenoir Counties .
Jones County is divided into seven numbered townships : 1 (White Oak), 2 (Pollocksville), 3 (Trenton), 4 (Cypress Creek), 5 (Tuckahoe), 6 (Chinquapine), and 7 (Beaver Creek).
history
Jones County was formed in 1778 from parts of Craven County. It was named after Willie Jones , a leader in the American Revolutionary War .
Eight buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 3, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Jones County had 10,381 people in 4,061 households and 2,936 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 60.97 percent white, 35.87 percent African American, 0.36 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian, 0.04 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.70 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.92 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.72 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,061 households, 31.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.2 percent of these were married couples living together, 15.2 percent were single mothers and 27.7 percent were non-families. 24.5 percent were single households and 11.4 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
25.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.2 percent between 45 and 64, and 15.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For all females there were 93.0 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 89.9 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,882, and the median income for a family is $ 35,180. Males had a median income of $ 28,662 versus $ 19,536 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,916. 16.9 percent of the population and 14.2 percent of families are below the poverty line. 22.3 percent of them are children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 16.7 percent are 65 years of age or older.
