Stokes County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Danbury .

geography

The county is located in northwest North Carolina, bordering Virginia to the north and has an area of ​​1,181 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Rockingham County , Forsyth County, and Surry County .

Stokes County is divided into nine townships : Beaver Island, Big Creek, Danbury, Meadows, Peters Creek, Quaker Gap, Sauratown, Snow Creek, and Yadkin.

history

Stokes County was formed in 1798 from parts of Surry County. It was named after Captain John Stokes, an officer in the American Revolutionary War and later judge for the US judicial district of North Carolina.

A total of 15 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 16, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Stokes County's population was 44,711. 573 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 17,579 households and 13,043 families. The population density was 38 people per square kilometer. The median income for a household in the county is $ 38,808 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,615. Males had a median income of $ 30,824 versus $ 24,319 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,130. 9.1 percent of the population and 6.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. 10.0 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 15.9 percent are 65 years of age or older.
