Johnston County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 121,965 people and a population density of 59 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Smithfield , named after John Smith , who donated the land to the founding of the city.
geography
The county is east of the geographic center of North Carolina and has an area of 2061 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Nash County , Wilson County , Wayne County , Sampson County , Harnett County, and Wake County .
Johnston County is divided into 17 townships : Banner, Bentonville, Beulah, Boon Hill, Clayton, Cleveland, Elevation, Ingrams, Meadow, Micro, O'Neals, Pine Level, Pleasant Grove, Selma, Smithfield, Wilders and Wilson Mills.
history
Johnston County was formed in 1746 from parts of Craven County. It was named after Gabriel Johnston , the governor of North Carolina from 1734 to 1752.
The county has a National Historic Landmark , the Bentonville Battlefield , where the Battle of Bentonville took place. A total of 35 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 3, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Johnston County had a population of 121,965. 1,717 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 46,595 households and 33,688 families. The population density was 59 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 78.09 percent white, 15.65 percent African American, 0.41 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.04 percent from the Pacific island area and 4.53 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.99 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 7.74 percent of the population.
Of the 46,595 households, 35.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.8 percent of these were married couples living together, 10.6 percent were single mothers and 27.7 percent were non-families. 23.1 percent were single households and 8.6 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.02.
26.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 34.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 21.7 percent between 45 and 64, and 9.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For all females there were 98.7 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 96.3 men.
The median income for a household in the 40,872 US $ and the median income for a family was $ 48,599. Males had a median income of $ 33,008 versus $ 25,582 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,788. 12.8 percent of the population and 8.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 16.0 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 19.4 percent of those aged 65 and over.
