Ashe County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Jefferson , named after President Thomas Jefferson .

The county is located in the far northwest of North Carolina, borders Virginia to the north, Tennessee to the west and has an area of ​​1105 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. In North Carolina, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Alleghany County , Wilkes County, and Watauga Counties .

Ashe County is divided into 19 townships : Chestnut Hill, Clifton, Creston, Elk, Grassy Creek, Helton, Horse Creek, Hurricane, Jefferson, Laurel, North Fork, Obids, Old Fields, Peak Creek, Pine Swamp, Piney Creek, Pond Mountain , Walnut Hill and West Jefferson.

history

Ashe County was formed on November 18, 1799 from parts of Wilkes County. It was named after Samuel Ashe , the ninth governor of North Carolina and patriot in the American Revolutionary War .

Ashe County's population was 24,384 as of the 2000 census . 301 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 10,411 households and 7,423 families. The population density was 22 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.16 percent white, 0.66 percent African American, 0.32 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.05 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.56 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.42 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
