Davidson County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Lexington , named in memory of Lexington in Massachusetts , the city where the American Revolutionary War began.

The county is located west of the geographic center of North Carolina and has an area of 1,468 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Davie County , Forsyth County , Guilford County , Montgomery County , Randolph County, and Rowan Counties .
Davidson County is divided into 17 townships : Abbotts Creek, Alleghany, Arcadia, Boone, Conrad Hill, Cotton Grove, Emmons, Hampton, Healing Spring, Jackson Hill, Lexington, Midway, Reedy Creek, Silver Hill, Thomasville, Tyro and Yadkin College.

Davidson County was formed in 1822 from parts of Rowan County. It was named after General William Lee Davidson .

As of the 2000 census , Davidson County had a population of 147,246. Of these, 1,896 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 58,156 households and 42,512 families. The population density was 103 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 87.05 percent white, 9.14 percent African American, 0.37 percent Native American, 0.82 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.66 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.94 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.24 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 58,156 households, 32.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.0 percent of these were married couples living together, 10.8 percent were single mothers and 26.9 percent were non-families. 22.9 percent were single households and 8.8 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.92 people.
24.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.2 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.1 percent between 45 and 64, and 12.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For all females there were 96.0 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 93.7 men.
The median income for a household (median) was 38 640 US $ , and the median income for a family $ 46,241. Males had a median income of $ 31,287 versus $ 23,622 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,703. 10.1 percent of the population and 7.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 13.3 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 12.1 percent of those aged 65 and over.
