Pasquotank County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Elizabeth City , named after Adam Tooley's wife , who donated the land to the town.

The county is located in northeast North Carolina, about 35 km to the east from the Atlantic Ocean , about 10 km to the north from Virginia , and has an area of ​​750 square kilometers, of which 588 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Camden County , Perquimans County, and Gates County .

history

Pasquotank County was formed in 1670 and named after an Algonquin tribe.

The Pasquotank County Courthouse in the Elizabeth City Historic District . The Historic District is one of twelve entries for the county on the National Register of Historic Places .

As of the 2000 census , Pasquotank County had 34,897 people in 12,907 households and 9,099 families. The population density was 59 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 56.93 percent white, 40.05 percent African American, 0.37 percent Native American, 0.86 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.49 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.26 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the city is $ 30,444, and the median income for a family is $ 36,402. Males had a median income of $ 30,072 versus women of $ 21,652. The per capita income was $ 14,815. 18.4 percent of the population and 15.5 percent of families are below the poverty line. 25.5 percent of them are children and young people under the age of 18 and 17.9 percent are 65 years of age or older.
