Transylvania County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Brevard , named after Ephraim Brevard , a teacher and surgeon.

The county is located in western North Carolina, borders South Carolina to the south and has an area of 986 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Henderson County , Jackson County, and Haywood Counties .
Transylvania County is divided into nine townships : Boyd, Brevard, Catheys Creek, Dunns Rock, Eastatoe, Gloucester, Hogback, Rosman, and Little River.
history
Transylvania County was formed on February 15, 1861 from parts of Henderson County and Jackson County. The name of the county is borrowed from Latin , where trans means 'beyond' and silva means 'forest' . This indicates the location of the county west of the Appalachians .
A total of 21 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 16, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Transylvania County had 29,334 people in 12,320 households and 8,660 families. The population density was 30 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.67 percent white, 4.21 percent African American, 0.28 percent Native American, 0.38 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.31 percent from other ethnic groups ; 1.12 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.02 percent of the population.
Of the 12,320 households, 25.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.6 percent of these were married couples living together, 8.7 percent were single mothers and 29.7 percent were non-families. 26.1 percent were single households and 12.4 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.74 people.
20.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 23.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.9 percent between 45 and 64, and 21.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For all females there were 92.7 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 89.5 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 38,587, and the median income for a family is $ 45,579. Males had a median income of $ 31,743 versus $ 21,191 for females. The per capita income was $ 20,767. 9.5 percent of the population and 6.6 percent of families are below the poverty line. 11.8 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 7.0 percent are 65 years of age or older.
