Halifax County is a county in the US state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Halifax .
geography
The county is located in northeast North Carolina, borders Virginia with the northernmost corner and has an area of 1894 square kilometers, of which 16 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Northampton County , Bertie County , Martin County , Edgecombe County , Nash County, and Warren County .
Halifax County is divided into 12 townships : Brinkleyville, Butterwood, Conoconnara, Enfield, Faucett, Halifax, Littleton, Palmyra, Roanoke Rapids, Roseneath, Scotland Neck and Weldon.
history
Halifax County was formed on January 1, 1759 from parts of Edgecombe County. Like the district capital Halifax, it was named after George Montagu-Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax .

According to the 2000 census , Halifax County's population was 57,370. 1,760 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 22,122 households and 15,308 families. The population density was 31 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 42.57 percent white, 52.56 percent African American, 3.14 percent Native American, 0.54 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.47 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.71 percent were from two or more races. and 1.01 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 22,122 households, 31.2 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 44.1 percent of these were married couples living together, 20.4 percent were single mothers and 30.8 percent were non-families. 27.7 percent were single households and 12.0 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.06.
26.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.0 percent were between 18 and 24 years old, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 23.2 percent between 45 and 64, and 14.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For all females there were 90.7 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 86.0 men.
The median income for a household in the 26,459 US $ , the median income for a family $ 33,515. Males had a median income of $ 28,025 versus $ 20,524 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,810. 23.9 percent of the population and 19.4 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 33.0 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 22.4 percent of people aged 65 and over.
