Pitt County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Greenville , named after Nathanael Greene , a general in the American Revolutionary War .

The county is located in east-central North Carolina and has an area of ​​1,696 square kilometers, of which 8 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Martin County , Beaufort County , Craven County , Lenoir County , Greene County , Wilson County, and Edgecombe Counties .

Pitt County is divided into 15 townships : Arthur, Ayden, Belvoir, Bethel, Carolina, Chicod, Falkland, Farmville, Fountain, Greenville, Grifton, Grimesland, Pactolus, Swift Creek, and Winterville.

history

Pitt County was formed on November 25, 1760 from parts of Beaufort County. It was named after William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham , a British statesman and Prime Minister.

A total of 30 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 14, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Pitt County had 133,798 people in 52,539 households and 32,258 families. The population density was 79 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 62.08 percent white, 33.65 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 1.08 percent Asian, 0.04 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.80 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.09 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.15 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
