Forsyth County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Winston-Salem , named after Joseph Winston , a major during the American Revolutionary War .

geography

The county is located in the mid-northwest, about 25 miles north of Virginia , and covers an area of ​​1,069 square kilometers, of which 9 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by Stokes County , Guilford County , Davidson County , Davie County , Yadkin County, and Surry County .

Forsyth County is divided into 14 townships : Abbotts Creek, Belews Creek, Bethania, Broadbay, Clemmons, Kernersville, Lewisville, Middle Fork, Old Richmond, Salem Chapel, South Fork, Vienna, Walkertown and Winston-Salem.

history

Forsyth County was formed in 1849 from parts of Stokes County. It was named after Colonel Benjamin Forsyth , a large landowner in the area who was killed in the British-American War .

The Bethabara Moravian Church in the Bethabara Historic District , which is one of four National Historic Landmarks in the county.

According to the 2000 census , Forsyth County had a population of 306,067.
