Bethania is the oldest settlement in Forsyth County , in the state of North Carolina in the United States of America and was named after the reactivation of the original municipal regulation of 1838/1839 in the year 1995 to the municipality.

As the first planned settlement of the Moravian Church (Engl. Moravian Church) is Bethania today the only remaining independent and continuously active Moravian settlement in the southern states and is the only known existing resulting German model agricultural community in the south. The approximately 2 square kilometers of the Bethania National Historic Landmark is the largest national landmark in Forsyth County. Bethania and its 18th and 19th century possessions are listed on the National and State Register of Historic Places.

Bethania was founded on June 12, 1759 by the Moravian Church as an agricultural and trading parish. The place was named after Bethany near Jerusalem in Israel , the home of Mary , Martha , Lazarus and Simons the Leper according to the Bible .

The center was registered in May 1976 under the designation Bethania Historic District as a Historic District in the National Register of Historic Places . In March 1991 this protected area was expanded. In August 2001, the Bethania Historic District was granted National Historic Landmark status.

In March 2007, Bethania opened a visitor center and a Historical Bethania Museum to provide information about the community and its cultural significance. The facilities include a restored Moravian farmhouse, the Wolff-Moser House, dating from around 1792, one of the oldest surviving Moravian agricultural buildings in North America, it can be viewed during the opening hours of the visitor center. The center also serves as a guide and starting point for those wishing to explore the Bethania National Historic Landmark District .
