National Historic Landmarks ( NHL ) are sites in the United States that have been designated by the Department of the Interior as particularly significant because they

  • Location of an important event in American history,
  • Place of work of an important American,
  • important national memorials,
  • outstanding examples of design and construction,
  • characteristic of a certain way of life or
  • are of archaeological interest.

Ensembles made up of several related buildings can be designated as a National Historic Landmark District .

More than half of the currently (March 2013) 2,540 National Historic Landmarks are privately owned. The National Historic Landmark Stewards Association is dedicated to preserving and protecting them. National Historic Landmarks are a subset of the sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places .
