Goliad is the district capital and county seat of Goliad County in the US state of Texas in the United States .

history

The place is one of the oldest Spanish settlements in Texas, then the viceroyalty of New Spain , founded by José de Escandón , founder and first governor of the colony Nuevo Santander . The place was renamed Goliad in honor of Miguel Hidalgo (as an anagram with a voiceless H ), a Mexican priest and revolutionary.

According to the 2000 census, 1,975 people lived here in 749 households and 518 families. The population density was 498.4 inhabitants per km². The racial the population was composed of 75.44% White, 6.08% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, and 14.99% other ethnic groups. About 2.53% were mixed race and 49.72% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
