history

The city, founded in 1808 as Greensborough, is located in the center of North Carolina in the Piedmont region ("at the foot of the mountain"). This is where Interstate 85 and Interstate 40 intersect .

Four African American students held the first sit-in here in 1960 in a restaurant reserved for whites to protest against racial discrimination . Later, in 1979, a massacre occurred in Greensboro when members of the American Nazi Party and the Ku Klux Klan murdered five protesters. The perpetrators were acquitted by a jury consisting only of whites.
