The Research Triangle (in German "Forschungsdreieck"), usually just called "The Triangle", is a region in the American state of North Carolina . In addition to the cities of Raleigh and Durham and the towns of Cary and Chapel Hill, the region also includes the universities of North Carolina State University , Duke University and University of North Carolina . The region, which is composed of eight counties, also bears the title "Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill CSA" and includes the metropolitan areas of Raleigh and Durham-Chapel Hill as well as the statistical areas of Dunn, Henderson, Oxford and Sanford. According to the 2013 population survey data, the region has 2,037,430 people.

The name of the "triangle" has been established since the 1950s after the Research Triangle Park , a science park with the headquarters of numerous technology companies, was founded there. Although the term "triangle" is now used for the entire region, it originally referred to the area around the three universities and the associated research facilities, which attracted numerous companies.
