In 1968, a year after desegregation , Chapel Hill became the first southern town to elect an African American mayor despite the majority being white. Howard Lee was mayor from 1969 to 1975 and helped establish the Chapel Hill Transit, the urban bus system. In 1993 the city celebrated its 200th birthday and opened the Chapel Hill Museum.
