Critics agree that Rees' first book on the art of sharpening a pencil is a crazy idea in a less scientific form. The existing since 2010, set up by Rees Artisanal Pencil Sharpening Service offers one for sent in to the artist pencils craft performed Spitzung. For a price of at least US $ 35.00, the sharpened pencil, the leftovers of wood and graphite, together with a sharpening certificate in a plastic tube, are sent by the representative of the centuries-old pencil sharpening craft from his home in Beacon (New York) .

Rees has been blogging about social and political issues for The Huffington Post since 2005 .

The Wired magazine's Codefellas web series, launched in 2013, is written by Rees.
