Eckhard Neumann

Eckhard Neumann (born April 15, 1933 in Königsberg , † March 24, 2006 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German graphic designer, design historian and publicist.

Life

Eckhard Neumann did an apprenticeship as a poster artist in Dessau after the war and painted agitation posters in the early GDR. Out of interest in the Bauhaus , he inquired about his successor and from 1953 initially studied at the advertising school in Berlin and later switched to basic teaching at the Ulm School of Design , where he studied until 1957. From 1957 to 1971 Neumann was advertising manager at the Swissair Germany headquarters in Frankfurt am Main. From 1965 to 1967 he taught the history of communication at the HfG Ulm. From 1973 to 1975 he was head of communications design at Braun AG, from 1975 to 1985 he was head of design promotion at the German Design Council , where, among other things, he was responsible for the press service "Design Report", a forerunner of today's magazine, until 1984. editorially supervised. From 1985 to 1988 Neumann was a lecturer at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences, and from 1988 he was professor of communication design at the Mannheim University of Applied Sciences.

Eckhard Neumann has contributed significantly to the rediscovery of the Bauhaus and typography of the 1920s and 1930s through exhibitions and publications since the mid-1960s. In 1964 he put together memories of the Bauhaus members for the first time for the catalog “Bauhaus - Idea - Form - Purpose - Time”. Later he visited the former teachers and students of the Bauhaus who lived all over the world and in 1971 published his best-known book "Bauhaus and the Bauhauslers". Neumann's address book read like a who's who of the avant-garde. In 1964 he also founded the "Werbung in Deutschland" Jahrbuch der Werbung , which he published until 1991 together with Wolfgang Sprang.
