The Design Council ( english German Design Council ) is a legal entity in the legal form of a charitable foundation and works as an advocacy for design-oriented companies. It has more than 300 members from the fields of business, design, associations and institutions.
history
The reason for the foundation was the strong criticism of the presentation of German products from the post-war period at the New York export fair in 1949: According to a motion by the SPD parliamentary group, the German Bundestag decided to set up an independent council for form development . This council was founded in 1953 in the legal form of a foundation with the express mandate to support the German economy in design as an economic and cultural factor. Since then, the Council has performed this task in the organization of exhibitions, competitions, conferences, publications and strategic consultations.
As the founding mandate of the German Bundestag put it, the donors' assembly forms a platform for communication between all those involved in the design process. The German design broker and consultant Mia Seeger is appointed managing director . One of the first activities of the council was the conception of the German exhibition contribution to the tenth Milan Triennale, whose architect was Egon Eiermann . In 1957, the council organized its own design congress for the first time under the motto “Create and distribute good forms”. In the years that followed, design congresses and exhibitions abroad were supported and our own events were held. The German Design Council participated in the selection of the objects that were shown in the German Pavilion (architecture: Egon Eiermann and Sep Ruf ) at the 1958 World Exhibition in Brussels. In 1962, the council designed its own touring exhibition for the first time under the name “Design in Germany”, in which various Swedish museums took part.
The logo was designed by the graphic designer Anton Stankowski (1906–1998).
From 1972, in cooperation with the German Industry and Trade Day, the Design Report press service was published , which informs interested journalists about current developments and trends in design. The Design Report has been published as a magazine by the German Design Council since 1987, initially from MacUp Verlag Hamburg from 1993 , and most recently from Konradin Verlag , Leinfelden. In the course of the separation of publisher and publisher, the publisher switched off the online archive of the magazine without replacement. The design report was discontinued with issue 2/2019 in June of that year. Since summer 2019, the German Design Council has been providing information on news from the fields of design, brands and innovation on the ndion website.
Founding mandate
The foundation is committed to a design concept that is suitable for creating both cultural and economic values. As the founding mandate of the German Bundestag put it, the donors' assembly forms a platform for communication between all those involved in the design process. With its interdisciplinary orientation, it is also a unique forum for cross-sector exchange on the development of design and guarantees the transfer of knowledge between the German Design Council and its target groups. Today the institution is one of the world's leading competence centers for communication and knowledge transfer in the field of design. With design prizes, exhibitions, conferences, consulting services, research, promotion of young talent and publications, it opens up new horizons for representatives of the economy and the design disciplines.

German Design Award
The German Design Award honors innovative products and projects, their manufacturers and designers in the German and international design industry. Only entries that have been nominated can take part in the competition. Evaluation criteria for nominations are, for example: overall concept, sustainability, aesthetics, durability and functionality.
In contrast to the usual award ceremonies, nominees and winners do not receive any prize money but have to make a payment. The “participation fees” (as of 2018) amount to 230 euros plus an organization fee of at least 70 euros for each individual contribution. If a nominated entry is drawn as a winner, additional costs from 2,080 euros will be charged for it. In 2016, the nomination fee was 449 euros and winners had to pay up to 4,450 euros.
The event is not financed by sponsors, but by the awardees, which has been viewed critically for years. However, the Newcomer award of the German Design Award 2018 is associated with prize money of 15,000 euros. The large number of award winners is also criticized. In 2018 the prize was presented to over 1000 winners.
