The Design Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany (DBD) - often called the German Design Prize or Federal Design Prize - was the highest officially awarded award for outstanding design in Germany from 2002 to 2014 . It was the successor to the Gute Form design award from 1969 to 2001.

The DBD was awarded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology . The award ceremony took place annually in February.

Modalities, history and criticism

Participants were nominated for this by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology or the respective responsible state ministries - and only if they had previously won another national or international design award. That is why the award was also called "the price of prizes". You couldn't apply for the prize yourself.

An independent and expert jury made up of ten members decided on the award . It was composed of representatives from industry, universities, design and the media. She was appointed by the Federal Minister for Economics and Technology for a period of four years.

Like many other design awards, this one did not bring any prize money for the participants ; on the contrary, it was chargeable. The award was therefore criticized by the professional public from 2006 onwards, triggered by an open letter from the nominated designer Juli Gudehus .

The award was organized by the German Design Council up until 2011 and was first entrusted to a young, small private company, DMY Berlin GmbH & Co. KG, as part of a new tender in 2012. Since then, the German Design Council has been awarding its own design prize, which was briefly called the “Design Prize Germany” and then renamed the German Design Award .

With the transfer of the organization of the Design Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany to the organizer DMY Berlin, the payment modalities changed: companies or designers paid a participation fee as before; but they no longer had to pay a “winner fee”. The youngsters had to pay a participation fee of € 350 per entry, but the young talent award has been endowed with € 8,000 since 2012.

The prize has not been advertised again since the last organizer went bankrupt in 2014.
