German Design Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Design Award has been honoring innovative products and projects as well as manufacturers and designers in the German and international design industry since 2011. In the first year the award was named "Design Prize Germany". In order to avoid confusion with the design award of the Federal Republic of Germany , the German Design Council changed the name of the award.

The award ceremony takes place annually in February.

Modalities

Since 2012, the German Design Council has been awarding its own design prize, which was briefly called the “Design Prize Germany” and then renamed the German Design Award, as there was a risk of confusion with the Design Prize of the Federal Republic of Germany . Awards are given in the two competition categories product design and communication design .

The formalities of the award ceremony are criticized. Entrants must pay for their nomination and after possible winning the prize. In addition, the quota of submissions to winners is disproportionately high. In 2016, 42 winners received the highest award, in 2014 90 winners were chosen.

The German Design Award Newcomer award is endowed: The finalists receive prize money that at the German Design Award 2019 was 2,500 euros per finalist. The winner of the award was announced at the award ceremony in February and received 15,000 euros. The total of 25,000 euros in prize money was donated by Deutsche Telekom in 2019, as in the previous year .
