Peter Schmidt (born December 10, 1937 in Bayreuth ) is a German designer .

In 1958 Peter Schmidt completed his studies at the Werkkunstschule Kassel and went to Hamburg in 1967 to work as Creative Director for Verclas + Böltz. In 1972 he founded the Peter Schmidt Studios together with Waltraud Bethge and managed it until he sold it to the BBDO in 2006.

In the first few years the company concentrated on packaging design for consumer goods and cosmetics and in 1980 began to design perfume bottles with great success. This was followed by national and international design orders, for example for Procter & Gamble , Estée Lauder and Apollinaris .

Peter Schmidt began to increasingly take on corporate design assignments and designed the corporate identity for the Hamburg State Opera , the Bundeswehr and the city ​​of Hamburg, among others . The Peter Schmidt Studios were renamed "Peter Schmidt Group" after the departure of the founder. Schmidt has been working with a small team of young designers in Hamburg since 2007 and operates under his name.

In addition to corporate design and product design, Peter Schmidt also designs books, magazines, rooms, stage sets and websites.

In the course of time, Schmidt designed much -noticed perfume bottles a . a. for Jil Sander , Hugo Boss , Strellson and Laura Biagiotti . Many of his flacons are classics today and can still be purchased after 20 years. His “Woman Pure” bottle (1980) for Jil Sander was temporarily in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Most recently he designed the "Nouveau Cologne" series for the 4711 brand in the perfume / cosmetics segment .

The “Form 2006” designed in 2006 for Arzberg porcelain has won many awards .

For the German Evangelical Kirchentag 2013 in Hamburg, Schmidt designed the campaign for the Kirchentag slogan “As much as you need”. The aim is to advertise the Kirchentag not only in Hamburg and the region around the North Church , but also nationwide.

At the end of 2015, the Franconian Viticulture Association presented a Bocksbeutel bottle redesigned by Peter Schmidt , which is intended to replace the previous bottles.

Books and magazines

Peter Schmidt has been designing books and magazines since 1987, including individual issues of Harper's Bazaar , “Architektur + Wohnen”, Der Feinschmecker and “Lufthansa Magazin”. As a designer, he also conceived books, a. a. “Jagmandir” with André Heller and “Das Apokalyptische Menu” with the photographer Christian von Alvensleben. The books “John Neumeier - On the Move” and “Kolja Kleeberg - Das Kochbuch” recently appeared in the Rolf Heyne Collection. The book “Staged Worlds” about Peter Schmidt was published in 2010 by the same publisher; he did the design himself.

In the 1990s, Peter Schmidt intensified his work in the field of art and culture and also turned to the theater. He designed the sets for John Neumeier's ballets “Zwischenzimmer” (1994), “Death in Venice” (2003) and “Parzival” (2007) as well as the sets and costumes for the opera “Madrugada” by Ichirô Nodairo, which was under the musical direction was premiered by Kent Nagano in 2005 at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. In October 2006 the exhibition “ Silent Voices ”, co-initiated and designed by Peter Schmidt, opened in the stalls foyer of the Hamburg Opera . In 2007 he took on the design of the “Lamento” festival at the Neuengamme memorial . He continuously designs stage sets and costumes for the Ernst Deutsch Theater in Hamburg (including for Tina Engels' production of Kleist's “ The Broken Krug ” in March 2009). Architecture / interior design and exhibitions

Peter Schmidt took over a. in 2000 the complete redesign at the world's largest Baumkuchen manufacturer Juchheim in Tokyo and designed the restaurants, shops and new products. He also redesigned the core product, the Baumkuchen. In 2002 he was entrusted with the redesign of the foyer of the Hamburg State Opera. In 2009 Peter Schmidt was responsible for the renovation of the concert hall in Bamberg.

Awards and charity

Peter Schmidt is involved u. a. for the step 21 initiative and the “Licht im Schatten eV” association. Numerous awards, including the Rolf Mares Prize and the Federal Cross of Merit, honor his cultural and social commitment. In 2006 he was awarded the honorary title of "Professor" by the Hamburg Senate. Peter Schmidt has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon and the Silver Medal of Honor of the City of Bayreuth. He also received the Karl Schneider Prize of the City of Hamburg and was awarded the Rolf Mares Prize of the Hamburg Theater in October 2007 for furnishing the play Nathan the Wise at the Ernst Deutsch Theater .
