The Gourmet is a monthly in Hamburg appearing special-interest magazine that deals with fine cuisine, wine and other issues of upscale enjoyment.

history

Der Feinschmecker first appeared in October 1975 as a takeover from Arne Verlag by Arne Krüger , who remained the publisher. Editor-in-chief and since 1988 publisher was Jochen Karsten (1925–2005). Similar to Spiegel-Magazin , the editorial post was not filled after the founder's death. Madeleine Jakits is the editor-in-chief of the magazine published by Jahreszeiten Verlag in Hamburg . According to IVW 2/2020, the sold circulation is 47,916 copies.

Editorial content

The magazine contains the headings travel, food, drink and lifestyle in every issue. The permanent authors include and have included Stuart Pigott , Eckart Witzigmann and Wolfram Siebeck . Every year the Feinschmecker chooses a “Chef of the Year”, a “Newcomer of the Year” and a “Restaurant of the Year”.

In addition, rankings are published again and again over the course of a year , which are enclosed with the magazine as supplements in the form of small, paperback paperbacks , such as “The 500 best restaurants in Germany”, “The best restaurants for every day”, “The best cafes and roasters "or" Germany's best foreign restaurants ".

The editors are also responsible for the book series Der Feinschmecker Guide with titles such as Der Feinschmecker Restaurant Guide , Der Feinschmecker Guide - Hotels & Restaurants on the Baltic Sea , Der Feinschmecker Guide - Landgasthäuser in Deutschland or Der Feinschmecker Guide - Culinary Dictionary . In addition, so-called bookazines are produced - “a mixture of book and magazine” - with titles such as Wine from Austria , Culinary Australia or Lake Geneva .

Restaurant reviews

The testers from Der Feinschmecker rate the restaurants they visit with F symbols, although half “Fs” can also be assigned as intermediate levels. The "Feinschmecker-Fs" stand for:

  • 1 Q: Kitchen above average
  • 2 Q: Very good cuisine, good service, pleasant atmosphere
  • 3 Q: Creative cuisine, very good service, comfort and ambience remarkable
  • 4 F: Kitchen and service outstanding, ambience with great comfort
  • 5 Q: Perfect in every way.

From these descriptions it follows that an evaluation with an "F" is to be understood as an award. A red, eight-pointed star can be awarded to restaurants that do not achieve an “F” level, but are nevertheless considered to be recommended by the editors. This stands for an "interesting location with a special concept / ambience / offer".

The "Feinschmecker-Fs" are taken into account by aggregators such as the Hornstein ranking , the Gerolsteiner restaurant leaderboard or the gastronomy portal restaurant ranking lists in order to create overall ranking lists based on the ratings of various restaurant guides.
