Restaurant rankings

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Restaurant Ranking Lists is a German-language catering portal. The editor is Hannes Buchner.

history

At the end of the 1980s, the computer scientist Gustav Volkenborn developed a comprehensive database from collected notes from restaurant visits, which he made available to the public with the advent of the Internet. He developed a points system that put the ratings of the major restaurant guides in book form - such as Guide Michelin , Gault Millau , Schlemmer Atlas , Varta-Führer , Der Feinschmecker Guide or Bertelsmann Guide - in relation to one another and thus objectified them. The result was the restaurant rankings. Volkenborn extended its rankings to France and Austria. Since the death of Gustav Volkenborn in 2006, the restaurant rankings have been continued by Hannes Buchner. In the meantime, the restaurant guide Gusto and the Slow Food Guide are also included in the calculation for the German ranking .

Rating System

The ranking system works as an aggregator and is based on the fact that the various restaurant guides are assigned different values: for example, in the table of points published for Germany, three Michelin stars result in 20 points, while the highest FFFF mark awarded by Feinschmecker is only worth 19.5 points. The Gr. Restaurant Guide awards a maximum of hhhh, which earns 18 points. The Slow Food GF seal only leads to 12 ranking points. The weighting of the individual guides depends primarily on the number of maximum marks given by the guides. The less top ratings a leader gives, the higher he is weighted. Restaurant rankings refer to these points as grades, the determination of which is explained as follows: "Due to the different methods and quality levels in the awarding of grades, the leaders are weighted and can change annually". It does not explain what exactly is meant by methods and quality levels and what criteria are applied to them. Just like this rating system used by restaurant rankings , the Hornstein ranking introduced by Wolf von Hornstein in 1981 is based on the evaluation of restaurant guides.

Competitions

On Gustav Volkenborn's initiative, the regional cooking competitions, the Great Gourmet Prize, arose, but this is no longer organized by the operators of restaurant rankings. These regional competitions are based on the rating system of restaurant rankings. The organizer is the media communication agency desas.

In addition, the operator of Restaurant-Ranglisten.de organizes the voting "Koch der Köche" at irregular intervals, most recently in 2012 and 2015. The chefs of the restaurants are entitled to vote in the first 100 seats of the Germany published by Restaurant-Ranglisten.de Ranking list. The criteria by which these 100 best chefs vote is up to them.

Content

The restaurant rankings are one of the larger portals of this type on the Internet. According to their own information, they recorded an average of 150,000 visitors a month, both from gourmets and from the catering industry.

Ranking lists are available for Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Great Britain and the USA. The German rankings are also available in book form. The rankings of other countries - rankings are now calculated for 43 countries and South Tyrol - take into account the guides relevant to the countries. Restaurant-Ranglisten.de also calculates a world restaurant ranking. In addition to the ratings of the restaurant guides, this also takes into account the ratings of guests on rating portals and other publications in the catering industry, such as the World's 50 Bestaraurants .

The portal also publishes daily news from the restaurant scene.

There is a proximity search for restaurants. a forum with reports on restaurants, a database with biographies of top chefs, and a podcast with interviews with star chefs. In addition, a chargeable gourmet club is offered, which includes gastronomy offers, among other things.
