Gustav Volkenborn (born January 16, 1941 ; † August 13, 2006 ) was a German computer scientist and is considered the inventor of the restaurant rankings .

Life

The computer scientist and former head of a data center, developed a comprehensive database from notes from restaurant visits, which he made available to an increasingly interested public with the advent of the Internet. At the same time, he developed a point system that put the ratings of the major restaurant guides in book form - such as Michelin Guide , Gault Millau , Schlemmer Atlas , Varta Guide , Der Feinschmecker Guide or Bertelsmann Guide - in relation to one another and thus objectified them. The result was new ranking lists, the " restaurant ranking lists ", a separate point system for restaurant guides. Volkenborn expanded its “ranking lists” to include France (also in French) and Austria.

The "restaurant ranking lists" are one of the larger portals of this type on the Internet. They recorded up to 100,000 visitors a month, not only from gourmets, but also from the catering industry. Gustav Volkenborn's initiative also owes its existence to regional chefs' competitions: for example the “Great Gourmet Prize” in Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia.

On August 13, 2006, Volkenborn collapsed while hiking and died at the age of 65.

The "restaurant rankings" were continued by Hannes Buchner.
