history

Historical logo

On January 1, 1888, the mine director Wilhelm Castendyck founded the company Gerolsteiner Sprudel W. Castendyck Gerolstein and initially had the mineral water bottled in clay jugs. The chemist Carl Remigius Fresenius recommended the water because of its high content of natural carbonic acid.

The company logo, consisting of an octagonal red star and the lion of the Gerolstein city arms, was entered in the register of symbols in 1889 and thus protected. The company exported water to Sydney in Australia as early as 1895.

In 1900 the company gradually switched from shipping clay jugs to glass bottles. Sales this year were 3.2 million fillings. In 1919 the legal form changed to a limited partnership .

With 158,000 bottles, export to the USA was resumed in 1928 and the Gerri lemonade came onto the market in 1934. In 1939 15.6 million bottles were filled; This made the company one of the top ten in the German well industry.

The Gerolstein plant was completely destroyed by air raids on Christmas 1944. The buildings and facilities were rebuilt by 1946 and the first bottles were filled again from 1948.

In 1953, the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Agriculture, Viticulture and Forestry declared that Gerolsteiner Sprudel was a non-profit source. This gave the mineral springs the status of state-recognized medicinal springs according to Rhineland-Palatinate water law .

In the 1950s, Gerolsteiner took over several wells companies and became Gerolsteiner Sprudel GmbH & Co. It all began with the takeover of Wilhelm Flamm & Co. in 1969, Schloss-Brunnen-Gerolstein Dr. Peter Dehottay KG and in 1970 finally the takeover of Rockeskyller Sprudel KG. Sales rose to over 100 million bottles for the first time.

In 1969, the Bitburger Brewery joined Gerolsteiner Sprudel GmbH & Co. as a limited partner when it took over Schloßbrunnen. In 1978 the dolomite spring was renamed the St. Gero spring, which is still known by this name today.

In 1984 negotiations began between the two large Gerolsteiner mineral water fountains Gerolsteiner Sprudel GmbH & Co. KG and Gerolsteiner Flora-Brunnen, Rud. Buse GmbH & Co. KG. This lasted until 1988.

In 1986 Gerolsteiner Stille Quelle was launched. In 1988 the name was changed to Gerolsteiner Brunnen GmbH & Co.

In 1989 an expansion phase of the Gerolsteiner Brunnen began with the acquisition of the Bad Pyrmonter mineral and medicinal springs. In 1990 the Margon fountain and the Glashäger fountain were acquired. In 1991 the Birresborner Phönix Sprudel was taken over.

In 1998 Gerolsteiner introduced the first reusable PET bottle for mineral water in Germany, which was heavily criticized by environmental groups.

From 2003, the company concentrated again on the Gerolsteiner umbrella brand and sold the Gerri lemonade brand to Sinziger Mineralbrunnen and the other subsidiaries to Brau & Brunnen . On November 11, 2003, the Birresborner Phönix Sprudel mineral fountain was closed due to contamination.
