Childhood and youth

Andrea Petković, daughter of Bosnian - Serbian parents, received German citizenship in 2001 . In addition to German and Serbian , she also speaks English and French .
When she was six months old, her family emigrated to Germany. She began playing tennis at the age of six. The initiative came from her father Zoran Petković ; a former Yugoslav professional tennis player and Davis Cup player. He was a coach in a tennis club in Darmstadt and played an important role in their team for a long time. Because of her good school grades, he advised her against a professional career and set her a deadline within which she should reach the top 50 in the world.

In May 2004 she won her first ITF tournament in Antalya . This was followed by victories in Podgorica (2004), Davos and Alphen aan den Rijn (both 2005), and she won another title in September 2006 in Sofia .

Cruciate ligament tear, comeback and victory in Bad Gastein (2007–2009)

In April 2007, Petković was nominated by the German team boss Barbara Rittner for the first time for the Fed Cup in Fürth against Croatia. There she was used in doubles alongside Tatjana Malek ; their win against the pairing Jelena Kostanić Tošić and Sanja Ančić (6: 3, 6: 7, 6: 3) helped Germany to a 4: 1 victory.

At the French Open , she took part in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time , where she qualified for the main draw without losing a set. With a 4: 6, 6: 3, 6: 3 victory over Jarmila Groth , she reached the second round, in which she was defeated by Marion Bartoli 6: 0, 2: 6, 3: 6. In July, Petković won her sixth ITF tournament in Contrexéville ($ 50,000). On July 30, 2007 she was among the top 100 of the WTA world rankings for the first time ; at the US Open she was therefore qualified for the first time for the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament. There she also reached the second round after a win (6: 4, 6: 1) over the American Audra Cohen , in which she was defeated by Lucie Šafářová with 3: 6 and 3: 6.

In December 2007 she was the first German champion among the active; in the final in Biberach she defeated Julia Görges 7: 5, 6: 7, 6: 4.

Petković ready to return

On January 15, 2008, she suffered a cruciate ligament rupture in the first round game of the Australian Open against Anna Tschakwetadze after two minutes of play . She then had to take a break for almost eight months. On September 1, 2008 in Maribor , she played her first tournament after the injury, by the end of the year she was able to improve to 315th place in the world rankings , among other things by winning the ITF tournament in Istanbul .

At the beginning of 2009, Petković was able to take part in the Australian Open thanks to a protected ranking . With a win over Kathrin Wörle she reached the second round, where she lost to Alizé Cornet . She was more successful at ITF tournaments; on May 10, 2009, for example, she won the title at the $ 100,000 tournament in Bucharest . In the semifinals she defeated Jelena Dokić and by June she made it back into the top 100.

On July 26th, Petković won her first title on the WTA Tour in Bad Gastein . On the way to the final, which she won against Ioana Raluca Olaru 6: 2, 6: 3, she beat Iveta Benešová , Anna-Lena Grönefeld and Jaroslawa Schwedowa , among others . She also reached the final of the doubles competition together with Tatjana Malek. The following week she was in the semifinals of the WTA tournament in Istanbul . There she lost to Lucie Hradecká 7: 6, 5: 7, 5: 7.

On August 3, 2009 she was No. 52 in the WTA ranking. In the course of the tournament she defeated u. a. Svetlana Kuznetsova - her first victory over a current top 10 player. In December she became German champion in Offenburg for the second time after 2007. She won the tournament without losing a set and defeated u. a. in the semi-finals again Julia Görges.

In February she played both singles and lost both games in the Fed Cup quarter-finals against the Czech Republic in Brno for the first time as the number 1 of the team.

In the following week in Paris, with victories over Katarina Srebotnik and Aravane Rezaï, who was seeded at number 5 , she reached the quarter-finals, in which she was defeated by Jelena Dementjewa 6: 3, 4: 6, 2: 6. At the French Open she reached the second round with a victory over Jelena Wesnina , in which she beat defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 6: 4, 5: 7, after having awarded three match points when the score was 6: 4, 5: 4, 4: 6 eliminated. Two weeks later, at the grass tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch , she reached her second final on the WTA Tour. On the way there she beat Ana Ivanović, among others. In the final she had to admit defeat to Justine Henin 6: 3, 3: 6, 4: 6. At Wimbledon, she lost to Anna Tschakwetadze in round one.

After her preparation for the US Open was unsuccessful, she played her best Grand Slam tournament there. After victories over the number 17 seed Nadja Petrowa (6: 2, 4: 6, 7: 6), Bethanie Mattek-Sands (3: 6, 6: 3, 7: 5) and Peng Shuai (without a fight) she stood in the round of 16, in which she was defeated by the eventual finalist Vera Swonaryova .

The new year started well for Petković: In Australia, she made it to the final at the year-opener tournament in Brisbane , but lost to Petra Kvitová very clearly. At the Australian Open, she started as No. 30 and achieved her best result in a Grand Slam tournament (including defeating Marija Sharapova ) with a place in the quarter-finals, in which she Li Na 2: 6, 4: 6 subject. In the halls of Paris , she also reached the quarterfinals (victories over Angelique Kerber and Kristína Kučová ), in which she was defeated by Bethanie Mattek-Sands in three sets. In Dubai , she failed in round two in three sets against Kaia Kanepi . At the big WTA event in Indian Wells , she did not get past the third round (two set defeat against Marion Bartoli). At the tournament in Miami , Petković was the first German since Steffi Graf to hit a world number one at the 1999 French Open . In the second round she defeated Caroline Wozniacki 7: 5, 3: 6, 6: 3 and in the quarterfinals she also defeated the former number 1, Jelena Janković , with 2: 6, 6: 2 and 6: 4, before Sharapova in the semifinals at 6: 3, 0: 6 and 2: 6 proved to be the stronger. For the first time in her career, Petković was among the 20 best in the world (19th place).

In the Fed Cup playoff against the USA , she won both of her singles in two sets (6: 3, 6: 4 against Christina McHale and 6: 2, 6: 3 against Melanie Oudin ). Germany won 5-0 and rose again to the first world group. Shortly afterwards she reached the quarterfinals with another three-set win over Janković at the WTA tournament in Stuttgart, but then failed despite a brilliant start to Caroline Wozniacki. At the tournaments in Madrid and Rome, she was eliminated in the second round. In Strasbourg, a week before the French Open, she won her second title on the WTA Tour. She benefited from the injury-related abandonment of her final opponent Marion Bartoli.

At the French Open, Petković moved into the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time in a row. There she was clearly defeated by Sharapova with 0: 6 and 3: 6. In Wimbledon , she advanced to the third round with victories over Stéphanie Foretz Gacon (6: 3, 6: 4) and Stéphanie Dubois (6: 3, 4: 6, 6: 3), in which she beat 20-year-old Xenija Perwak 4: 6, 6: 7 lost. At the WTA tournament in San Diego , she was eliminated in the semi-finals against Agnieszka Radwańska 6: 4, 0: 6 and 4: 6 (she vomited in set two due to a slight food poisoning). With her good results she was among the top ten of the WTA world rankings for the first time - albeit initially for only one week. In the quarter-finals in Toronto she lost to Radwańska (4-6, 3-6) also the fourth match against the Pole.

In New York, she made it to the quarter-finals of the US Open for the first time, in which the world number one Caroline Wozniacki, however, put her down in the tiebreak of the second set with 7: 5 (final result 6: 1, 7: 6). At the subsequent tournament in Beijing , Petković moved into the final after partly close games against Šafářová, Suárez Navarro, Bartoli and Pavljutschenkowa and a 6: 2, 6: 0 over Monica Niculescu . But she couldn't use the chance to win her third WTA tournament; she was also defeated by Radwańska in the fifth meeting (5: 7, 6: 0, 4: 6), after tying with a furious second set, but then missing two chances to break to 5: 3 in the third.

Numerous injuries, long breaks and second comeback (2012-2013)

After the WTA tournament in Sydney in January, Petković was diagnosed with a fatigue fracture in the sacroiliac joint in the lower back, so she had to cancel the Australian Open.

After more than three months injury break, she started in Stuttgart . In the last sixteen encounter against world number one Wiktoryja Asaranka , she gave up at 2: 6, 4: 4 due to injury; she was twisted and torn a double ligament that needed surgery. At the beginning of June, Petković was able to start rehab. She wanted to take part in the Olympic Games in London , but had to cancel her participation on July 18 due to the injury.

On August 20, Petković celebrated her comeback at the hard court tournament in New Haven , where she beat Tímea Babos 6: 3, 5: 7 and 7: 5 in the first round .

When they made their debut at the Hopman Cup on December 29, 2012, the next setback occurred. When the score was 6: 4 in the game against Ashleigh Barty , she had to give up because of another knee injury. An MRI scan the next day found that the medial meniscus was torn. She had to cancel the Australian Open and the Fed Cup in February.

Petković made her comeback at the Indian Wells WTA tournament . She lost her match in the qualifying round against Mónica Puig 6: 7 2 and 3: 6. Two weeks later she was in the main draw of the Sony Open Tennis in Miami thanks to a wildcard . Here she was eliminated in the third round against Ajla Tomljanović . Since their world rankings were not enough for direct participation in the French Open , they had to qualify ; she lost there in round two to Zhou Yimiao from China with 7: 6 1 , 6: 7 2 and 4: 6. After she was knocked out of doubles at the French Open in round one, she played the $ 100,000 ITF tournament in Marseille , which she won with a final victory (6: 4, 6: 2) over Anabel Medina Garrigues . The following week she confirmed her good form at the WTA tournament in Nuremberg . In the final, she had to admit defeat to Simona Halep , the climber of the year, 3: 6 and 3: 6.

Petković received a wild card from the organizer for Wimbledon . After a victory over Pauline Parmentier , she failed there in the second round 6: 7 2 , 6: 2 and 6: 8 to Sloane Stephens .

On September 17, she was eliminated from the Korea Open , seeded number 7, in round one against Francesca Schiavone . A week later at the Toray Pan Pacific Open , after a first round win over Jelena Wesnina , she lost again to 13-seeded Simona Halep. At the China Open , she first defeated defending champion Wiktoryja Asaranka and in the second round Swetlana Kuznetsova , before she was eliminated after a tough fight with 4: 6, 7: 6 4 and 6: 7 2 against Lucie Šafářová .

Tournament wins, first Grand Slam semi-final, Fed Cup final and 1st Bundesliga (since 2014)

The 2014 season began Petković in Brisbane , where she won her opening game against Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4 and 7-5 before losing to Serena Williams 4-6, 4-6. After many injury-related failures, she took part in the Australian Open for the first time in three years ; she lost there in round one with 2: 6 and 3: 6 against Magdaléna Rybáriková . In doubles, she reached the second round at Annika Beck's side . After an unpleasant month of March and a change of coach, she finally won her third individual title on the tour at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston on April 6th .

At the French Open , she reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. There she was left behind against Simona Halep despite a 3-1 lead in the second set with 2: 6 and 6: 7 4 . In July she won the Bad Gastein tournament for the second time by beating qualifier Shelby Rogers in the final . She qualified for the Tournament of Champions , which she won with a final victory over Flavia Pennetta . With the German team, Petković reached the final of the Fed Cup , which was lost to the Czech selection with 1: 4. The second best year of her career after 2011, she finally finished in world number 14.

The year 2015 started promisingly for Petković with a victory in Antwerp and a place in the semi-finals at the tournament in Miami . However, she could not confirm the positive trend in the further course and often had to accept early defeats at tournaments. In the Grand Slam tournaments of the year, she did not get past the third round. She was able to qualify for the new year-end tournament in addition to the WTA Championships , for the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai , China , but clearly lost both group games there in straight sets, in the defeat against Carla Suárez Navarro she lost in 51 minutes with 0: 6 and 0 : 6. After the end of the season, Petković, who had slipped to 24th place in the world rankings, publicly considered retiring in November 2015. In addition to motivation problems, she also mentioned difficulties in her private environment. After a change of coach - Petković had been coached by Jan de Witt since the 2016 season - and a strategic realignment, the German announced that she would continue her career. Ultimately, the end of a career was never an issue.

Since the 2019 season , Petković has been playing for the TC Blau-Weiß Dresden-Blasewitz in the women's first tennis division .

Coaching team

At the beginning of her career she was coached by her father Zoran Petković , who played for Yugoslavia in the Davis Cup . Until October 2010 she also supported Glen Schaap, who was replaced by Petar Popović at the 2010 US Open . From February 2014 to November 2014, Petković was supervised by Eric van Harpen . On December 17, 2015, she signed Jan de Witt as a new trainer for an initial year. For the 2017 season she will be coached by Sascha Nensel, who previously worked with Julia Görges .

In addition to technical training, she relies on the Argentine coach Juan Bernardo Carberol, who previously stood by Rainer Schüttler , in the fitness area . Since 2011 Petković has been training at the Schüttler Waske Tennis University, founded by Rainer Schüttler and Alexander Waske . With the engagement of Jan de Witt, she has repeatedly held training units at the Gerry Weber Breakpoint Base in Halle (Westphalia) .

Others

In the spring of 2006, Petković did her Abitur with an average grade of 1.2 at the Georg Büchner School in Darmstadt after she had skipped the eleventh grade . As a tennis professional, she also studies political science at the Distance University in Hagen .

At irregular intervals, she reported on the FAZ website about her life and experiences on the tennis court. She also writes a column in the magazine of the Süddeutsche Zeitung .

Due to a bet she lost at the US Open in 2010 with her trainer Petar Popović, she made the "Petko-Dance" her trademark. After a match she won, she said goodbye to the audience with a little dance. When other players expressed criticism, Petković gave up the ritual.

The fate of her childhood friend Jonathan Heimes , who was trained as a student by Petković's father and played in the same club, prompted her to get involved with people with cancer. Together they founded the " You must fight" campaign , which collects donations for the Help for Children with Cancer Association in Frankfurt . She also supported the German Cancer Aid with a benefit program in 2014.

Since December 2019, Petković has been in front of the camera at irregular intervals as the presenter of the ZDF sports report. Their first broadcast aired on December 1, 2019. The 32-year-old wants to continue her tennis career and play tournaments in 2021.

Petković founded the online book club Racquet Book Club in March 2020 , where followers can discuss literature . In addition, her first book, an autofiction, will be published in autumn 2020 .
