Jelena Vjačeslavovna Dementjewa ( Russian Елена Вячеславовна Дементьева , scientific transliteration Elena Vjačeslavovna Dement'eva ; born October 15, 1981 in Moscow ) is a former Russian tennis player .
Career
Dementieva started playing tennis when she was seven years old. She played and trained with her colleague Anastassija Myskina sometimes seven hours a day. She started her professional career in 1998, and one year later she reached the top 100 .
In 2000 she became the first Russian tennis player to reach the semifinals at the US Open , which she lost to Lindsay Davenport . In the same year she won the silver medal at the Olympic Games in Sydney (final defeat against Venus Williams ). She won her first WTA title in 2003 in Amelia Island .
In 2004 she was twice in the finals of a Grand Slam tournament . At the French Open she lost to Anastassija Myskina, at the US Open she was defeated by Svetlana Kuznetsova . At the end of the 2005 season, Dementjewa ranked 8th in the WTA world rankings . She traveled to all tournaments with her mother Wera, who also coached her and (out of superstition) had to wish her “good luck!” Before every game. As an all-rounder, she felt comfortable on every surface. She was one of the fastest tennis players on the tour. One of their greatest weaknesses was the serve. It was also noteworthy that in many games, after a clear lead, she often had to go over three sets. She also suffered a lot of losses to players who were not in the top 100 . After she reached the final of the French Open in 2004, she was divorced. B. at Wimbledon in the first round against Sandra Kleinová . In 2004 there was another bitter defeat against Alicia Molik at the Olympic Games in Athens.
2006
At the start of the season, Dementjewa was eliminated in round one at the Australian Open with 5: 7 and 3: 6 against the German Julia Schruff . However, she won the subsequent tournament in Tokyo with a 6-2, 6-0 final win over Martina Hingis . After the match she said about Jelena: "If she played like this every time, she would soon have to win Grand Slam tournaments."
At the Indian Wells tournament she came to victories a. a. via Ana Ivanović , Li Na and Justine Henin to the final, which she lost to her compatriot Marija Sharapova with 1: 6 and 2: 6. At the French Open she lost to Shahar Peer 4: 6, 5: 7 in round three . She reached the semi-finals of 's-Hertogenbosch , which she lost after a match point against Michaëlla Krajicek .
In Wimbledon she made it to the quarter-finals, but lost again to Sharapova 1: 6, 4: 6. Dementjewa was one of the players who complained about Sharapova's loud groans . Despite her defeat, she received praise for the first time for her serve, which she now played as a slice and thus reached speeds of up to 180 km / h. However, she still had problems with the second serve, which was either too slow or resulted in a double fault .
In the Fed Cup game against Croatia , she won her two singles. In August she first defeated Sharapova in Los Angeles and Jelena Janković in the final 6: 3, 4: 6 and 6: 4. At the US Open she was in the quarterfinals for the fourth time, this time losing to Janković (2: 6, 1: 6). In Stuttgart , she had to give up after a hard-fought game against Katarina Srebotnik in the following match due to injury. In Moscow she defeated u. a. Shahar Peer and Patty Schnyder and then lost in the semifinals to Anna Tschakwetadze .
In 2006, Dementjewa was the only one of the eight players at the WTA Tour Championships who had been in the major season-end tournament since 2000. After defeats against Sharapova and Kuznetsova and against Kim Clijsters , however, she was eliminated in the preliminary round.
2007
The year began with a round of 16 participation at the Australian Open, where they lost to Nicole Vaidišová 3: 6, 3: 6. At the WTA Antwerp tournament , she injured herself in training before the match against her compatriot Jelena Lichowzewa and had to pause until the end of February. Due to the break of six weeks, she fell out of the top ten for the first time since September 2003 . On May 1, she returned to the tournament in Warsaw , but she lacked match practice. She won with difficulty 6: 7, 6: 0 and 7: 5 against Meilen Tu from the USA and had to admit defeat to Venus Williams 1: 6 and 6: 7 in the second round. At the German Open in Berlin, she prevailed in round one against Mara Santangelo and in round two against Meghann Shaughnessy in three sets. In the last sixteen she lost to her compatriot Nadja Petrowa 3: 6 and 3: 6. At the Tier I tournament in Rome, Dementjewa advanced to the quarter-finals after victories over Maria Elena Camerin , Catalina Castaño and Nadja Petrowa, which she lost to Jelena Janković 2: 6 and 1: 6, even if many games were contested . In Istanbul , the last tournament before the French Open, she won the final against a strong Aravane Rezaï , who had to give up injured at 6: 7, 0: 3. Dementjewa secured her seventh individual title on the tour, the first this year.
In Roland Garros, however, she only reached the third round. After victories over Angelique Kerber and Mathilde Johansson , she lost in a weak match in which she made almost 50 "avoidable mistakes" with 2: 6 and 4: 6 against Marion Bartoli . In Eastbourne , the preparatory tournament for Wimbledon, she got to the quarterfinals, in which she lost again to Bartoli. In the 1: 6, 0: 6 defeat, Dementjewa had problems with her serve again.
At Wimbledon she was defeated by Tamira Paszek 6: 3, 2: 6 and 3: 6 in the third round . At the Tier I tournament in San Diego she defeated Castano, Kerber, Bartoli and her compatriot Marija Kirilenko and only lost in the semi-finals 6: 7, 4 and 0: 6 against Patty Schnyder. In Los Angeles , Dementjewa defeated the defending champion Makarova , the American Brengle and a strong Daniela Hantuchová , before failing in the quarterfinals 3: 6, 4: 6 to Sharapova.
In Toronto , after a bye in round one, she surprisingly lost 7: 6, 3: 6 and 2: 6 to Francesca Schiavone . After victories over Stéphanie Cohen-Aloro and Petra Cetkovská, she advanced to round three of the US Open, in which she was defeated by Sybille Bammer 1: 6, 2: 6. Participation in the Tour Championships was a long way off.
After losing to the returning Lindsay Davenport in Beijing in the quarter-finals, she also made it to the quarter-finals in Stuttgart. After victories over Amélie Mauresmo and Daniela Hantuchová, she lost 4: 6 and 4: 6 to world number one Justine Henin after a hard fight. Somewhat surprisingly, she then won her home tournament in Moscow; after victories over Wiktoryja Asaranka and Dinara Safina , she was able to beat Serena Williams for the first time in the final . With her 5: 7, 6: 1, 6: 1 success, Dementjewa moved back into the top ten, but ultimately missed participation in the WTA Tour Championships in Madrid.
2008
At the Australian Open she only made it to the round of 16, where she lost to the eventual winner Sharapova 2: 6, 0: 6. At the Paris tournament she lost in the semifinals after match points against the young Hungarian Ágnes Szávay with 3: 6, 6: 1 and 5: 7. In early March, she won her ninth individual title on the tour. In Dubai she defeated Patty Schnyder, Aljona Bondarenko, Ana Ivanović, Francesca Schiavone (who had previously defeated Justine Henin) and in the final Svetlana Kuznetsova 4: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 2. She had fought hard for success, as the games against Ivanović and Schiavone lasted just under three hours. At the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, she had to give up her quarterfinal match against Janković due to a shoulder injury. Nevertheless, she moved up to eighth place in the world rankings.
At the French Open Dementjewa was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Dinara Safina. In Wimbledon she reached the semi-finals for the first time after victories over Nadja Petrowa, which she lost to Venus Willams.
At the Olympic Games in Beijing she defeated Serena Williams, among others. In the all-Russian final, she defeated Dinara Safina 3: 6, 7: 5 and 6: 3 and now won the gold medal after the silver in Sydney in 2000.
At the US Open she came after victories over Li Na in the eighth and Patty Schnyder in the quarterfinals in the semifinals, which she lost 4: 6, 4: 6 against Jelena Janković. In the world rankings, she again achieved her best position with fourth place, which she had already achieved in October 2004.
After she had reached the quarter-finals in Tokyo and Stuttgart, she went to the Kremlin Cup in Moscow as the defending champion. This time, however, it was over in the semi-finals, she was defeated by the world number one Jelena Janković 6: 0, 1: 6 and 0: 6. Two weeks later she defeated Caroline Wozniacki in the Luxembourg final and won her eleventh title. She had already qualified for the WTA Tour Championships in Doha in September. In her group she defeated her compatriots Safina and (who moved up for Serena Williams) and Petrowa and lost to Venus Williams. So she reached the semi-finals for the first time since 2000, which she lost 6: 7, 6: 3 and 3: 6 against Vera Swonaryova . In 2008 she finished in 4th position.
2009
At the beginning of the year Dementjewa was able to book two tournament victories. First, she defeated her compatriot Jelena Wesnina 6: 4 and 6: 1 at the WTA tournament in Auckland . A week later, she defeated Serena Williams in the semi-finals in Sydney with two sets and in the final Dinara Safina 6: 3, 2: 6 and 6: 1. At the Australian Open she reached the semi-finals for the first time after four round of 16 appearances, which she lost 3: 6 and 4: 6 to the eventual winner Serena Williams. At the indoor tournament in Paris she was defeated in the final Amélie Mauresmo in three sets. In Dubai, she lost as the defending champion in the quarterfinals 3: 6 and 3: 6 against Venus Williams. After the early break in Indian Wells, she made it to the round of 16 in Miami, which she lost to Wozniacki. In the world rankings published after the tournament, she was third for the first time in her career. She was only the sixth Russian woman to have succeeded.
In the semi-finals in Charleston, she lost again to Wozniacki, albeit in three sets. At the tournament in Stuttgart she also reached the semifinals. In Madrid it was over against Mauresmo in the round of 16. At the French Open, she lost 3: 6, 6: 4 and 1: 6 against Samantha Stosur in the third round . At Wimbledon, like last year, she reached the semi-finals, which she lost after a hard fight and a match point against the eventual winner Serena Williams 7: 6, 5: 7 and 6: 8. The Rogers Cup in Toronto, one of the preparatory tournaments for the US Open, she ended with a 6: 4, 6: 3 final victory over Sharapova. At the US Open, she was defeated in the second round in three sets by the American Melanie Oudin .
According to the WTA, she qualified again for the WTA Tour Championships in mid-September. In Tokyo, where Dementjewa had already won in 2006, she lost to Kateryna Bondarenko in the second round . In Beijing she lost 5-7 and 3-6 in the quarter-finals against future finalist Agnieszka Radwańska .
At the final WTA Tour Championships in Doha, she was eliminated after the preliminary round. She lost her group games against Serena Williams (2: 6, 4: 6) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (3: 6, 2: 6). The win against Venus Williams with 3: 6, 7: 6 and 6: 2 had only statistical value. Dementjewa finished the year at number 5 in the world.
2010: End of career
At the beginning of the year she won her title at the Sydney tournament with victories a. a. defend over Safina and Asaranka. In the final, she defeated Serena Williams 6: 3 and 6: 2. At the Australian Open, she lost in the second round in a close match against the returning Justine Henin 5-7 and 6-7.
At the indoor tournament in Paris Dementjewa won her 16th individual title. In the final she defeated Lucie Šafářová 6: 7, 6: 1 and 6: 4. At the Dubai tournament she had to retire in round two due to a shoulder injury when the score was 4-6, 1-1 against Daniela Hantuchova. The next tournament she played at the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur , where she was number 1 in the final with 3: 6 and 2: 6 defeated her compatriot Alissa Kleibanowa . In Indian Wells was the last stop after losing to Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarterfinals. After a bye, she lost in Miami in round two 3: 6 and 2: 6 against Justine Henin. The following clay court tournaments on the way to Roland Garros were just as unsatisfactory. In Rome she lost in the round of 16 against Ana Ivanović with 1: 6 and 6: 7, in Madrid she was eliminated in the second round against Alexandra Dulgheru with 1: 6, 6: 3 and 5: 7.
The French Open also ended in disappointment. She had to be treated for a short time when she won the quarterfinals over Petrowa; she had to give up the semi-final against the eventual winner Francesca Schiavone after the first set due to thigh problems. Dementieva took an eight-week break because of a calf injury. In her first appearance after that she was defeated in the quarterfinals by Stanford Sharapova in three sets. The following hard court tournaments were not very satisfactory. In Cincinnati she lost in the second round to her compatriot Anastassija Pavlyuchenkova and in Montreal she was eliminated in the round of 16 against Zheng Jie . At the New Haven tournament, however, she reached the semi-finals, which she lost to Caroline Wozniacki 6-1, 3: 6 and 6: 7.
The US Open ended for Dementjewa in the round of 16 against Samantha Stosur. In the match, which lasted over three hours, the Australian got the upper hand with 6: 3, 2: 6 and 7: 6.
At the Tokyo tournament, which she was able to win in 2006, she advanced to the finals and once again had to admit defeat to Wozniacki 6: 1, 2: 6 and 3: 6. In Beijing, the place of her Olympic triumph in 2008, she lost in the round of 16 against Ivanović in two tiebreaks. During the tournament it became known that Dementjewa had qualified for the tenth time for the WTA Tour Championships. There she lost her group game against Wozniacki with 1: 6 and 1: 6. Her second match against Samantha Stosur (4: 6, 6: 4, 7: 6) should be her last win.
After the last group game against Francesca Schiavone, which she lost 4-6 and 2-6, Dementjewa announced her departure from professional tennis on October 29, 2010. She was denied a title win at a Grand Slam tournament.
Personal
On July 16, 2011, Jelena Dementjewa married the Russian ice hockey player Maxim Afinogenow .
