Marion Bartoli (born October 2, 1984 in Le Puy-en-Velay , Haute-Loire department ) is a former French tennis player . She celebrated her greatest success in 2013 when she won the title at Wimbledon .

Career

Marion Bartoli was introduced to the game of tennis at the age of six by her father (a doctor), who also trained and looked after her until the end of her career. In 2000 she became a professional player.

As a junior she not only won the US Open in 2001 , but also the Australian Hard Court Championships and the Victorian Championships . In 2002 she outclassed the four-time Grand Slam tournament winner Arantxa Sánchez Vicario 6: 3 and 6: 1. A few months later, she made it into the top 100 of the WTA world rankings .

2006-2010

In 2006 she won her first title on the WTA Tour in Auckland, New Zealand ; in New Haven she beat the then number 6 in the world, Nadja Petrowa , with 4: 6, 6: 4, 7: 6. The season ended with a final in Bali and tournament victories in Tokyo and Québec.

Bartoli celebrated her first great success in 2007 when she reached the final of Wimbledon , but there was defeated by Venus Williams in two straight sets. Placed in 18th position, she eliminated number 3 of the tournament with Jelena Janković in the round of 16 and even the top seeded Justine Henin in the semifinals . In addition, this year she was both at the French Open (loss to Jelena Janković) and at the US Open in the round of 16 (loss to Serena Williams ).
In 2007 she also played the final in Prague (defeat against Akiko Morigami ) and reached the semi-finals in Eastbourne (defeat against Justine Henin), in Luxembourg (out against Daniela Hantuchová ) and in Linz (out against Patty Schnyder ). She was also in the quarter-finals in Toronto (loss to Zi Yan ) and in Zurich (out against Tatiana Golovin ). Bartoli qualified for the WTA Tour Championships in Madrid and finished her best year to date as tenth in the world rankings.

She was unable to build on her previous year's successes in 2008, but she confirmed her top 20 placement with her participation in the final in Stanford (loss to Aleksandra Wozniak ) and semi-finals in Montreal (loss against Dominika Cibulková ) and Linz (out against Wera Swonarjowa ).

At the Australian Open in 2009 she achieved another big win (6: 1, 6: 4) over the new number one, Jelena Janković, which made her move into the quarter-finals. She won her fourth title in Monterrey with a final win over Na Li . At the end of the year, Bartoli was number 12 in the world.

Her greatest success in 2010 was reaching the semi-finals in Miami (category: Premier Mandatory), in which she was defeated by Venus Williams in two sets. In Cincinnati and Montreal (both category: Premier 5) the end came in the quarterfinals against Marija Sharapova and Wiktoryja Asaranka .

2011-2013

At the French Open in 2011, she advanced to the semi-finals, in which she was defeated by defending champion Francesca Schiavone in a match characterized by strong gusts of wind . Three weeks earlier she had to give up in the final in Strasbourg at the beginning of the second set due to injury and leave the tournament victory to Andrea Petković . At the Eastbourne grass tournament , she then secured her first WTA title on grass. After a clear semi-final win over Samantha Stosur , she defeated Petra Kvitová in the final , who demanded three sets from her. This moved Bartoli to 9th place in the world rankings. In Wimbledon she ended her comeback with a contested 6: 3, 7: 6 6 over defending champion Serena Williams and made it to the quarter-finals, in which she beat Sabine Lisicki 4: 6, 7: 6, 4 , 1: 6 had to. Serena Williams was able to return the favor at Stanford; In the final, Bartoli lost to the resurgent American after a contested first set with 5: 7 and 1: 6.

The year 2012 started promisingly with the move into the quarter-finals in Sydney , in which she was stopped by the world number one Asaranka. In Melbourne she lost to Zheng Jie in round three , but still achieved her best position in the world rankings after the tournament with 7th place. At the indoor tournament in Paris she was in the final against Angelique Kerber , who she had to admit just barely beaten 6: 7, 7: 5, 3: 6. In Doha she was eliminated in the semi-finals against Sam Stosur. In Indian Wells came the end in the quarterfinals against Ana Ivanović , before she could move into the semi-finals again in Miami, in which she was clearly defeated by Agnieszka Radwańska . At the French Open, for which she had been traded as an insider tip in advance, she failed in round two against the young Petra Martić ; also at Wimbledon, where she was defeated by Mirjana Lučić-Baroni 4-6 and 3-6. At the hard court tournament in San Diego she then reached the final, which she lost to Dominika Cibulková with 1: 6 and 5: 7.

Bartoli wanted to compete for France in the 2012 Olympics in London. Although she was the best-placed French player in the world, she did not meet the requirements of her national tennis association, which stated that a player is only eligible to participate in the Olympic Games if she has signed up for the French Fed at least twice in the two years before the Olympics . Cup team had made available. Bartoli did not meet this requirement; she only competed for France in the Fed Cup in 2004. Although the French Minister of Sport David Douillet was supported and also submitted an application to the ITF , the French federation refused an exception. (Bartoli had always asked to be looked after by her father at the Fed Cup, which the association did not allow her).

On July 6, 2013 Bartoli won the tournament at Wimbledon with a final victory over Sabine Lisicki and thus secured the only Grand Slam title of her career. She was the sixth player to win the tournament without losing a set.

On August 14, 2013, after she was eliminated in three sets in her second game at the WTA tournament in Cincinnati against Simona Halep , she surprisingly announced the end of her career. Bartoli, who was 7th in the WTA world rankings at the time, justified the move with her poor health.

2018

In December 2017, she announced her plan to return to the tour; she hopes to start at the Miami WTA tournament in March 2018. But she did not take part in the tournament. Instead, declared in June 2018 to have given up this project due to physical problems.

Style of play

Marion Bartoli played both forehand and backhand with both hands from 1992. In the year mentioned, her father had seen a match by Monica Seles , who successfully practiced this technique, and recommended that his daughter also play with both hands.
